User Reviews

Users generally praise 1650 Split Leaf Psalter for its intuitive layout, wealth of content, diverse tunes per psalm, and helpful live recordings that aid congregational singing. Many cite strong offline access and a free, comprehensive resource including commentary. However, recurring complaints center on a recent redesign that many find harder to use, the loss of harmony and the ability to link or search by tune, and low-quality live recordings. Some users also request tempo controls and lyric highlighting to better match words to melodies.
Pros
  • Intuitive, easy-to-use layout.
  • Rich content: multiple tunes per psalm with the ability to pair tunes to the lyrics, plus commentary.
  • Live recordings help congregational singing and are easy to follow.
  • Strong offline functionality for most features (live recordings require internet).
  • Free and comprehensive resource for singing the Psalms.
Cons
  • Design update made the app harder to use.
  • Loss of harmony and the ability to link favorite tunes or search by tune.
  • Poor quality live recordings in some cases.
  • Playback tempo issues: tunes can be slow; lack of tempo control/variation.
  • Difficulty aligning lyrics with tunes; no lyrics highlighting.

I used to love this app, but not since they drastically changed the design. It’s now difficult to use. I hate it now. I would listen to the live recordings, and it was easy to sing along because the Psalm from the book was right there with the recording. That’s not the case anymore. I won’t be using it again.

I have used and enjoyed this app for several years but for me, this latest update is disastrous. I appreciate the ability to have the music and the words joined but now only the melody plunked out is available, no harmony. I also cannot find a way to link my favorite tunes to each psalm as it was in the older versions. I have recommended this app to many folks but hope they downloaded it before this version and do not “upgrade”. I would love to be able to return to the previous version even though it was not downloadable to a laptop.

Very intuitive layout, which is great! Only thing that could be added is a way to adjust the tempo of the playback of the music files. (Not sure how this would happen logistically.) Many of the tune files are very slow and not ideal for singing along.
