Features & Capabilities

Paperpile helps you beat paper chaos by keeping all your research PDFs in one tidy library. It lets you search millions of papers from 20,000+ journals, add new PDFs with one tap, and save directly from your browser. If you need restricted content behind paywalls, you can use your university's off-campus proxy.

Organize with folders, subfolders, and colored labels, and mark important papers with stars for quick access. Read with a fast PDF viewer, highlight in several colors, add notes, and even hand-draw annotations with a stylus or Apple Pencil. Note: a Paperpile account is required to use the app.

User Reviews

Paperpile’s iOS app excels at annotation, organization, and a clean UI with strong cross‑device syncing, and is valued for long‑term use and support. However, login/auth issues, limited mobile feature parity with the web, sync/annotation inconsistencies, stability problems, and file handling/export constraints substantially affect the mobile experience. Addressing authentication, mobile feature parity, and reliability would significantly boost user satisfaction.
Pros
  • Robust PDF annotation and highlighting features that make reading and note-taking easy.
  • Strong paper organization with color labels, tags, and folders for easy sorting and management.
  • Excellent cross-platform sync and seamless access between web and iOS/iPad, with smooth integration across devices.
  • Clean, minimalistic UI that is easy to use and navigate.
  • Long-term value with ongoing updates and solid user support.
Cons
  • Login/authentication issues on iOS (Google login errors and university authentication not working on iPad).
  • Mobile feature parity is lacking (cannot edit entries on mobile; shared folders/web features not accessible in the app).
  • Sync and annotation problems across devices (highlights disappearing, annotations not syncing consistently; may require logging out/in).
  • App stability concerns (frequent crashes on iPad/iOS).
  • File handling constraints (file size/upload limits, difficulty uploading PDFs from mobile; missing export options like BibTeX).

Every time I revisit a paper, I have to correct missing highlights because parts or entire segments of highlights are missing. It’s almost like I’m rereading the entire document. Please fix

lots of great features in the website are not in the mobile app yet, such as shared folder. I really hoped the developers can update the app.
