Road Trip Planner™ is a Chrome extension that helps you map locations with pins, plan routes, and build a complete itinerary. Add arrival/departure times, travel times, notes and photos, and switch between Route Pins and POI Pins to create a realistic travel plan. Sample files (including Route 66) help you get started, and a free RTP Viewer lets you demo the app before saving. It respects your privacy with no data collection and no required subscription.

Each pin supports rich activities, costs, contact details, and links. You can export pins to calendars, import/export GPX data, cache maps offline, and share or print itineraries that include maps, routes, and costs. Choose Apple Maps or OpenStreetMap, and manage your trips as separate documents for easy reference across devices.

Road Trip Planner offers a rich feature set and strong value, with easy planning once learned and solid cross-device support. However, users repeatedly note outdated map data, a lack of automatic cloud syncing, a challenging onboarding and editing experience, and hard-to-find itinerary controls, impacting reliability.

Pros

Feature-rich with many tools for road trips (routes, stops, itinerary, notes, icons, multiple map options).
Easy to use and intuitive once you learn the basics.
Cross-device support and cloud/sync via iCloud, with a MacOS companion and desktop/iPhone compatibility.
Good value for money: low price and inexpensive, offering a lot for the cost.
Powerful itinerary/routing capabilities that calculate times/distances and let you plan stops.

Cons

Map data often appears outdated; Apple Maps integration misses roads/POIs; users supplement with Google Maps.
Lack of automatic cloud syncing across devices; manual backups/updating routes are required.
Steep learning curve and lack of clear instructions; editing UI can be clumsy.
Itinerary controls/settings are hard to find or modify; editing is not intuitive.
Some features can stop working or are removed in updates, causing reliability concerns.

I don’t write reviews very often, but I’ve been using this app a LOT lately, and I really appreciate how handy it is. I start with the main places I want to go and get a basic route that gives me an idea of times and distances. After that, it’s so easy to add in stops and places to stay and rearrange things and generate an itinerary. There’s a little bit of a learning curve at the beginning, but once you understand a few basics, it’s very easy to use.
