Features & Capabilities

ZeroTier One for iOS enables secure, peer-to-peer virtual Ethernet networks that work as VPN connections on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. It lets you connect clouds, remote teams, and IoT devices directly, without any hardware.

Getting started is quick: tap '+', enter your network ID and name, then join. You can add multiple networks, but iOS limits one VPN connection per network extension; flipping one on will disconnect others. For more details and open‑source options, see ZeroTier's website and GitHub—the core engine is available to the community.

User Reviews

Users praise ZeroTier One for reliable remote-network access and quick setup, but report repeated iOS login/connectivity issues, missing customization options (custom root and moon/leaf/planet settings), and compatibility problems with apps like Moonlight and Shadowrocket. Performance and stability are also concerns. Long-time users value its VPN-like LAN access, yet many want better reliability, feature parity, and clearer iOS behavior.
Pros
  • Reliable access to personal and client networks via ZeroTier's VPN-like capability
  • Barebones UI but quick, straightforward setup for getting things done
  • Effective for connecting to remote LANs across routers and devices
  • Long-term user trust and consistent success for years
Cons
  • Frequent connectivity and login problems on iOS / general inability to connect
  • Missing or removed customization features (custom root, moons/leaf/planet settings) and related UI options
  • Compatibility issues with other apps and services (e.g., Moonlight, Shadowrocket)
  • Performance and reliability concerns (slow connections, drops, instability)

I'm a long-time ZeroTier user running my own root server (custom planet). On version 1.14.2 the iOS app had a gear/settings icon in the top-right corner that opened a screen where I could paste my base64-encoded planet file. It worked reliably and was the reason I was able to use ZeroTier on iPhone at all. After updating to 1.16.0, that settings icon is gone. There is no visible way inside the app to import or edit a custom planet anymore. I understand from the official 1.16 release blog post that the intended new flow is to scan a QR code from joinzt.com/addplanet via the iPhone's system camera, which should then deep-link into the app via a universal link and prompt to import the planet. In practice this does not work for me on 1.16.0: - The system camera recognizes the URL but tapping the banner just opens the joinzt.com page in Safari; the ZeroTier app is never launched. - Scanning the same QR code from inside the ZeroTier app's own scanner does nothing — that scanner appears to only accept 16-hex network IDs. - Reinstalling the app did not restore the universal-link association. The result is that custom planet support, which the release notes explicitly highlight as a 1.16 feature for power users, is effectively unreachable on iOS. This is also reported in GitHub issue #2518, with multiple users describing the same regression. Please either: 1. Bring back the in-app settings screen for pasting a base64 planet (as in 1.14.2), or 2. Fix the universal-link handling so the joinzt.com QR / URL flow actually launches the app and triggers the import dialog. Until then, anyone running their own roots is stuck and cannot downgrade through the App Store. Thanks for considering — ZeroTier is otherwise a great product and I'd like to keep using it on iPhone.
