Gmailto Firefox

Gmailto

By: Desiwah
Gmailto opens the real Gmail compose window from any mailto link. The recipient's address is copied to your clipboard, just paste it into "To" and send. No huge draft screens, no fake clients, just pure Gmail, fast and simple as it should be!

Features & Capabilities

This extension makes mailto: links actually useful again by opening the real Gmail compose window.

When you click on any mailto: link, Gmailto will:

  • Open the official Gmail website in a new tab (just like if you opened it yourself)
  • Wait for Gmail to fully load and then open a real compose window, not some huge draft screen or fake editor
  • Automatically copy the recipient’s email address to your clipboard
Once the compose window appears, all you need to do is:
  • Right-click in the "To" field and choose Paste or just press Ctrl + V on your keyboard
That’s it! Now you can type your message and send it just like you normally would.

Why doesn’t it paste the email automatically?

Because Gmail’s own website prevents extensions from interacting with the input fields directly. This is a built-in security feature by Google. No addon can bypass this without using unsafe methods, which Gmailto does not do.

Instead, Gmailto gives you the next best experience by copying the address for you, so pasting it is just one quick action away.

Tips:

  • You can click multiple mailto links, each one opens in a new Gmail tab
  • Works perfectly with multiple Gmail accounts (just choose the right one in your browser)
Permissions:

This extension asks for the following permissions so it can work smoothly:

  • Required:
    • Access browser tabs: to open a new Gmail compose tab in your browser
    • Clipboard write access: to copy the recipient’s email address when a mailto link is clicked
    • Access to all websites: only to detect mailto links when clicked (no page data is accessed or collected)
  • Not Used:
    • No background scripts
    • No trackers
    • No data collection of any kind

User Reviews

Looked on the add-ins browser to see if there was something like I was looking for and found this! Copying mailto links to clipboard rather than opening my mail app is a godsend. Kinda wish there was the option to not open a gmail tab by default though.
