User reviews
Users appreciate Annotate for its ease of use on webpages, helpfulness in teaching, and cross-browser compatibility. However, major drawbacks include mandatory intrusive registration, limited free features forcing premium upgrades, and bugs causing freezing during exports. Additionally, recent updates have damaged pen responsiveness, the interface feels outdated, and toolbar usability suffers under zooming. Many reviews request improvements like better shortcut customization, more colors for free users, and fixing loading issues.
Pros
- Easy to use for web annotations and works well with webpages, even retaining annotations when scrolling.
- Helpful and powerful annotation tool, suitable for online teaching and presentations.
- Compatible with multiple browsers like Chrome and Edge.
- Allows adding highlights, basic drawings, and text effectively.
- Developers are responsive to user feedback and improving the extension.
Cons
- Requires mandatory account registration with intrusive personal info, which deters many users.
- The free plan is heavily limited with few annotations and features available, pushing users to upgrade to premium.
- Exporting annotations or using features like Google Drive integration can be buggy, causing freezing or loading issues.
- Recent updates caused pen input to be unresponsive or harder to use, affecting usability.
- The interface is outdated or clunky, with inconvenient toolbar behavior when zooming or lacking customizable shortcuts.

Requires way too much personal info in order to sign up for the Annotate.net account (mandatory to use the extension)! Why do you need to know my salutation, first name, last name, and birth date? For that reason, I AM OUT!!!

12 annotations on a free plan with a lackluster 1990s interface.
