Search Filter Firefox

Search Filter

Allows you to make specified domains STAND OUT or DISAPPEAR from Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, and StartPage search results.

Features & Capabilities

Search Filter is a powerful Chrome extension designed to improve your search results since 2012. It allows users, especially developers, to customize their search by highlighting preferred domains and hiding unwanted ones across major search engines like Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, and StartPage.

With features including support for image, video, and news searches, easy filter creation directly from search results, and syncing configurations across multiple installations, Search Filter helps you efficiently filter out irrelevant or low-quality results. It supports developer-friendly configurations for specifying domains to stand out or disappear, making repetitive API or problem-focused searches more productive. Regular updates keep it compatible with search engine changes and include performance improvements to ensure a smooth experience.

User Reviews

Reviews are mixed. Some users praise Google-focused filtering that blocks spam and improves readability, and even blocks image results. However, many report reliability problems: it often stops working, uses high CPU, or isn’t updated for current Firefox versions. A lot of feedback also says it doesn’t reliably support non-Google engines (DuckDuckGo, Ecosia) and that the UI can be hard to access (toolbar icon missing). Functionality is inconsistent across pages with occasional CSS glitches; source code access is unclear.
Pros
  • Strong Google-focused filtering that blocks spam and unsafe sites.
  • Improves readability of Google search results with color cues and icons.
  • Can block image results from specified sites.
  • Considered an essential tool for some searches.
Cons
  • Reliability and maintenance concerns: frequent reports of not working, high CPU usage, and lack of updates on current Firefox versions.
  • Limited to Google in practice; non-Google engines (DuckDuckGo, Ecosia) are not reliably supported and claims of cross-engine support are inconsistent.
  • UI/accessibility issues: toolbar icon often missing or greyed out; limited UI (highlight/hide) controls.
  • Inconsistent behavior across pages (works on first Google page but fails on subsequent pages) and occasional CSS issues (Google Images).
  • Lack of clear source repository or ongoing maintenance.
