What is GitHub Whitespace?
"GitHub Whitespace" is a smart Chrome extension that effortlessly redirects GitHub pull request pages to ignore whitespace changes. It eliminates the need to switch 'Hide whitespace changes' option manually, saving you three clicks per session. The extension boasts a minimal design and easy enable/disable option from the Chrome Extensions tab. It now also supports GitHub Enterprise. Simply by clicking the Extension icon, you can enable "GitHub Whitespace on this domain".

OK workaround, but for the use case "hide whitespace by default but allow showing it", this extension doesn't work. The extension ignores trying to show the whitespace changes.

So dumb that github doesn't have this as the default view, but until they do, this extension is required by all github users.
