User reviews
Stark Accessibility Checker is praised for its comprehensive accessibility features like color contrast checking, color blindness simulation, and integration within Chrome and various design tools. Users find it invaluable for early detection of accessibility issues and improving WCAG understanding. However, multiple reviews highlight frustration that key features are locked behind a login or premium subscription, contradicting free version promises, and an issue with the eye dropper's color selection. While it's considered a must-have tool for designers focused on inclusivity, some users desire more features accessible without payment or sign-up.
Pros
- Provides automated color contrast checking and color blindness simulation that helps catch accessibility issues early.
- Integrates well into the Chrome browser and design software, offering flexibility to check various tools like Canva and PowerBI.
- Offers useful features like focus order visualization and touch target size checking, beneficial for mobile design.
- Helps improve understanding of WCAG guidelines with documentation and tips.
- Highly recommended by designers as a must-have tool for accessible and inclusive design.
Cons
- Many key features, including color contrast checking, require users to log in or upgrade to a premium subscription, limiting the utility of the free version.
- Some advertised free features, like landmarks and WCAG scans, are behind a paywall, leading to false advertising perceptions.
- The eye dropper tool does not always select colors correctly, causing functionality issues.
- Compared to other products, some basic accessibility checks are less accessible without payment or registration.
Recent reviews
As a product designer, Stark has transformed how I approach accessible design. The automated color contrast checking, focus order visualization, and color blindness simulation have helped me catch accessibility issues early. The touch target size checker is particularly useful for mobile designs. Their documentation and tips have also improved my understanding of WCAG guidelines. A must have for any designer serious about creating inclusive products

Not worth it. Nice UI, and I get that you have to monetize, but I'm not signing up just to get the same info dev tools can give me. At least make some features accessible without an account.

Stark says on their website that their "Starter" (free) version includes "WCAG Scans in browser", which is technically true I guess, it does let me scan the page... However, it won't show me the actual result unless I upgrade to a premium subscription, so that is pretty useless. Manual tools work fine though, I'm just annoyed with the false advertising.
