New Tab Override

Load a custom URL when opening a new tab.
What is New Tab Override?
New Tab Override is a unique Google Chrome extension. It enables users to set a custom URL to be loaded every time a new tab is opened in the browser. Unlike many extensions that implement this by redirecting to the custom URL and then attempting to focus back on the address bar, New Tab Override is designed to load the URL in the background, and injects its content into an initially empty new tab page. This innovative approach means there is no redirection, thus guaranteeing that the address bar never loses focus, offering a seamless browsing experience.

Extension summary

Most extensions that allow a custom URL for the new tab page do so by redirecting to the URL then attempting to focus on the address bar.

The second step of focusing on the address bar when using the redirect method was broken in Chrome 61.

This extension fixes the second step by using a new method, rather than redirecting it loads the URL in the background then injects its content into a empty new tab page.

This means there is no redirect, and therefore the address bar never actually loses focus in the first place.

Permissions:

  • Read and change all your data on the websites that you visit - Used only to load the URL in the background, none of your data or websites you visit are ever read or changed.
  • Replace the page that you see when opening a new tab - Duh!

Make it black screen on new tab please. its flash-banging my eyes. tried replacing page with site with black screen but it just adds extra processing and also displays a white screen until the site fully loads so can't be it. otherwise pretty good extension.

It seems to be very slow (tested on multiple fast devices on different fast networks), when trying to load in certain websites, and if the website does load it's sometimes missing images for some reason. Pretty generous giving it 4 stars.

Doesn't work with local files. I set it to open a local html file on my desktop and it just opens a blank new tab.
