Features & Capabilities

The Sun Now Chrome extension lets you access stunning, up-to-date images of the sun published by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Images refresh approximately every 15 minutes, allowing you to observe solar activity in near real-time. Users can zoom and pan images, browse historical solar data, and even set their favorite images as wallpaper for continuous inspiration.

The extension integrates with Muzei Live Wallpaper for dynamic backgrounds and provides basic solar winds data sourced from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. All images and descriptions are courtesy of NASA/SDO and its scientific teams. Please note that image availability depends on NASA's SDO website functionality. User Reviews

Users appreciate the app's comprehensive and current solar images from NASA's SDO, praising its educational value and image quality. However, multiple reviews highlight reliability issues, including frequent app freezes and stoppages often tied to NASA certificate expirations. Feature requests include customizable wallpaper options, AMOLED-friendly backgrounds, widget support, and video playback of solar changes. Despite its occasional technical problems, the app remains a favored and recommended tool for solar observation enthusiasts.

Pros

Provides great, current and clear views of the sun in multiple spectrums.
Includes detailed visual data from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory that is valuable for astronomy education.
User-friendly and informative interface, highly recommended by users.
Offers unique data like AIA 4500 band that is no longer available elsewhere.
Allows setting solar images as device wallpaper or lockscreen.

Cons

App frequently stops working or freezes, often due to NASA certificate or data source issues.
Lacks features such as customizable wallpaper settings and a pure black background for AMOLED displays.
No widget feature available, which some users desire for quick sun monitoring.
No video format to easily observe changes over time within the app.
