UniverseDaily – Sun & Planets

Point at the sky: star map · live NASA Sun · 3D planets · Hubble & JWST photos

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Hold your phone up to the sky and the stars on screen line up with the real ones. Open the app in the morning and a new NASA photo is waiting. UniverseDaily is an astronomy app built on real telescope and observatory data from NASA, ESA and the great observatories of the world. It is not made to be studied. It is made to be looked at.

* Sky — what is above you right now
Point your phone anywhere and see the Sun, Moon, planets, 1,665 stars and 89 constellations exactly where they really are. Switch on the camera background and they sit over the real sky. Outside, there is a red night mode. Drag the time slider and you can look at tonight, tomorrow, or a year from now.
Sunrise, sunset and twilight. Tonight's Moon phase. Which planets you can see from where you are, and when they rise. The next eclipse, the year's meteor showers, and the aurora forecast. When the Moon passes close to a planet, the app tells you first — and an arrow guides you to it in the sky.

* Today — the Sun, live
A 72-hour timelapse of the Sun from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory starts playing the moment you open the app. 19 ways to look at it: flares erupting, sunspots drifting across the face, arcs of plasma many times the size of Earth. Plus NASA's Picture of the Day, and today's Moon with its phase, its age and the next full moon.

* Explore — a planet in the palm of your hand
Spin all seven planets in 3D, Saturn's rings and all, each one with its moons laid out at their real size and distance. See the whole Earth the way a satellite a million miles out sees it, then drain the water away and look at the seafloor. Turn the Moon between your fingers, mapped by NASA's lunar orbiter, with real places marked on it. Cut 16 worlds in half and see what is inside, all the way down to the core. Then follow how our own planet was born, and how life may have begun on it — step by step, from stone to a living thing.
Compare anything with anything: how big, how far, how fast. Fly between the planets at the speed of light and find out how many minutes it really takes.
Then keep going, out past the Solar System. Stars, star clusters, what a star leaves behind when it explodes, the clouds they were born from, galaxies, and the vast web they hang in. An encyclopedia of 70+ real objects — Sirius, the Pleiades, the Crab Nebula, Andromeda — with photographs and facts. 25+ interactive 3D scenes: a star living and dying, two galaxies colliding, a supernova going off. One scene shows you what gravity really is (space itself, bending) and another what light really is. Another traces where the atoms in your body were made.

* Gallery — a new picture every day
Hubble, James Webb, the European Southern Observatory, and the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers on Mars. Freshly picked, every day.

* On your home screen
A widget that rotates through today's pictures from NASA, Hubble, JWST and ESO. Optional alerts when a new Picture of the Day arrives, and when tonight's sky is worth stepping outside for.

* Good to know
Korean, English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), German and Traditional Chinese. Phones and tablets, portrait and landscape, light and dark, with Material You colors on Android 12 and up. No account, no sign-up.

Images and data: NASA · ESA · ESO · NOAA · USGS · Yale Bright Star Catalogue · astronomy-engine. The app does not collect personal data.
