Features & Capabilities

MyShake Earthquake Alerts is a free and comprehensive app providing early warning alerts for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater in California, Oregon, and Washington using the USGS ShakeAlert system. It helps users prepare with safety tips, disaster plans, and guidance on how to stay safe during an earthquake.

The app features an interactive global earthquake map with detailed data, the ability to receive notifications for earthquakes starting at magnitude 3.5 in selected regions, and engagement in a global smartphone-based seismic network that turns your device into a mini-seismometer to help detect earthquakes worldwide. Developed by the University of California, Berkeley Seismology Lab and funded by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, MyShake supports multiple languages and is ad-free with no subscription fees.

User Reviews

Users like the app for broad, real-time quake info and easy use, with useful alerts. However, reliability is a major concern: delayed/missing alerts, uneven regional coverage, intrusive ads, stability problems, and disruptive test notifications. Improvements in timing accuracy, regional availability, and UX would significantly boost usefulness for emergency readiness. Overall, it’s helpful when functioning well, but not consistently dependable across regions.
Pros
  • Broad, real-time earthquake information on a worldwide scale, including user-reported data.
  • Easy to use and able to run in the background.
  • Helpful for staying informed about quakes in regions that experience frequent activity (e.g., California).
  • Alerts/notifications keep you updated during quake events.
Cons
  • Alerts are inconsistent, delayed, or occasionally missing, reducing reliability in emergencies.
  • Regional coverage is limited or not available for many areas, with some regions not shown at all.
  • Ad content is intrusive and can detract from the user experience.
  • Stability issues occur where the app closes/crashes or feels not smooth to use.
  • Test notifications can be disruptive or wake users at inconvenient times.
