Navia: AI Accessible Map

By: Appricodes App
A touchable offline map for blind users, with AI that recognises your places.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Navia is a map you can touch. Slide a finger across the screen and Navia speaks the street, shop or place under your finger: its name, what it is and how far away it is. It is built for blind and low-vision people, with TalkBack at its heart. Its on-device AI can also recognise the places you save, such as your front door, and tell you which way to turn to face them.

A MAP YOU CAN FEEL WITH YOUR FINGER
- Touch the screen and hear what is there: streets, house numbers, shops, bus stops, crossings, benches, trees and more
- Sweep your finger across the map to build a mental picture of the streets and where things are in relation to each other
- Unnamed roads and points are announced with clear names, such as "service road" or "pedestrian crossing"
- Points win over roads when you touch them, so small things like a bus stop are easy to find
- Directions as clock positions ("2 o'clock, 40 meters"), the way orientation and mobility (O&M) training teaches
- "Aim" at any point and get live distance-and-direction updates as you walk toward it

AI PLACE RECOGNITION (EXPERIMENTAL)
- Film a place you visit often for 5 seconds: your front door, a shop entrance, a bus shelter
- When you come back within 50 metres, point the camera ahead: Navia's AI says when it sees the place and how many degrees to turn to face it, with a vibration when you are facing it
- Recognition runs entirely on your phone and your photos never leave it. The AI model (about 240 MB) is downloaded once, the first time you open the feature

SOUND SIMULATION (NEW)
- Double-tap any point and choose "Simulate the sound here" to hear that place around you in 3D: traffic, trams, a park, the waterside, a market
- The sounds are built from the map data around the point. Use headphones and turn to hear where things are

ACCESSIBLE FROM THE FIRST SCREEN TO THE LAST
- Designed around TalkBack, not adapted for it afterward: every button is labelled and every dialog can be read aloud
- Dictate instead of typing: search, add points and rename places by voice
- Works fully offline once you have downloaded your area, with no signal needed while you are out walking
- 47 languages, with the interface, voice input and speech all following your language
- No ads, no account and no tracking

ALSO FOR LOW VISION
- A clear drawn map shows exactly what you can touch, with a different marker shape for each kind of place (not colour alone), street names and a light or dark theme with a black background
- Switch the drawn map on or off, or let it turn itself off while TalkBack is running

MAKE IT YOURS
- Add your own points: a friend's door, a favourite bench, a stop the map missed
- Save favourites for places you return to
- Filter by category or keyword so only what matters to you is announced

HOW IT WORKS
1. Open Navia and download the map for your area (once; after that it works offline)
2. Turn on TalkBack if it is not already running
3. Slide a finger over the screen and Navia speaks what is under it
4. Double-tap a place for more: aim at it, hear its sounds, open it in Google Maps, add it to favourites
5. Use the nearby list, search or voice dictation to find where you want to go

SAFETY
Navia is an extra aid. Never base your movement on what it tells you: GPS, map data and software can all be wrong. Always use a white cane, a guide dog or another safe method, and treat Navia as a second source of information only. AI place recognition can also be wrong or miss a place.

PRIVACY
Navia does not need a sign-in, shows no ads and does not track you. Map data stays on your device. See the Privacy Policy for the small amount of crash-diagnostic data that is sent only if you switch it on.
