Sight Words: Flash Card Games

By: Syanac App
Sight word flash cards for kids — Dolch & Fry, read aloud, works offline

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Sight Words: Flash Card Games turns the words your child is learning to read into flash cards that read themselves out loud. Tap a card and it speaks. Swipe it to say they knew it. Ten cards make a round, and a round takes about two minutes — short enough to do before dinner, often enough that the words actually stick.

TYPE IN THIS WEEK'S LIST FROM SCHOOL

Most weeks a sheet of words comes home on Monday, and those are the words your child is tested on. Type them in and practice exactly those. The cards read them aloud, the games use them, and by Friday the list is done. Typing in your own list is the thing a general word game cannot do, and it is why this app exists.

THE LISTS EVERY CHILD MEETS

• All 220 Dolch sight words, in the five lists they are taught in: pre-primer, primer, first grade, second grade and third grade
• The Dolch picture nouns
• The Fry first 100 — the hundred words that make up about half of everything in print
• Every list you type in yourself

Words that sit on both the Dolch and the Fry list are marked, so you can see the overlap.

FOUR WAYS TO PRACTICE

• Flash cards — the word, big and alone, read aloud on a tap. Swipe right for "knew it", left for "practice again"
• Listen & Find — hear a word, then pick it out of four cards. The wrong answers are the words children actually confuse: was and saw, where and were
• Word Match — find the pairs on the board
• Spell It — hear the word, then build it from letter tiles

EVERY WORD IS READ ALOUD

Every card, every list and every game speaks, using a voice already on your phone. There is nothing to download and no connection needed. A child who cannot read a word yet can still practice it, which is the whole point of a sight word.

INSTEAD OF PRINTABLE WORKSHEETS

If you have been printing sight word worksheets and cutting out flash cards, this is the same practice without the printer, the scissors, or the pile of card stock in a drawer.

SEE WHAT IS STICKING

A word counts as known after three correct answers spread across at least two different days — one good afternoon is not the same as knowing a word. The progress report shows mastery for each list, the practice streak, and the words that keep tripping them up, so you always know what to work on next.

MORE THAN ONE READER

Add a profile for each child. Their lists, their progress and their streak stay apart, so nobody practices on their sibling's words.

A GENTLE NUDGE, IF YOU WANT ONE

An optional once-a-day reminder can invite them back to keep the streak going. It is scheduled on the device, you choose the time, and it is off until you turn it on.

QUIET BY DESIGN

• No ads, anywhere
• No account, no sign-up, no email address
• Works completely offline — on a plane, in a waiting room, in the car
• Nothing is uploaded. Progress stays on the device, and you can save a backup file yourself

WHO IT IS FOR

Kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade readers. Pre-K children just starting out. Homeschooling families. Parents who want ten minutes of reading practice that does not turn into an argument. Teachers sending words home on a Monday.

ABOUT THE WORD LISTS

The Dolch list was published by Edward Dolch in 1936 and the Fry list by Edward Fry in 1957. Both are public-domain research word lists. This app is not affiliated with any curriculum publisher, school, or school district.
