Review summary

Users appreciate Standard Notes for its strong security, privacy, and seamless syncing across devices, praising its simple and effective note-taking functionality and supportive customer service. However, common complaints focus on poor mobile text editing experience, frequent crashes, problematic import processes, paywalls on previously free features, and ineffective Android sharing options. The app is well-regarded for encryption and basic note management, but users find usability and stability issues that diminish the experience, especially on mobile platforms.
Pros
  • Strong encryption and privacy with end-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge architecture.
  • Cross-platform syncing works well allowing notes to be accessed on multiple devices seamlessly.
  • Simple, clean, and reliable note-taking experience, especially appreciated for journaling and basic note keeping.
  • Responsive and helpful customer support team in resolving issues.
  • The paid extended features add valuable functionality such as SuperNotes and encrypted backups.
Cons
  • Text selection and editing on mobile is frustrating and often difficult to use accurately.
  • The app frequently crashes or becomes unresponsive, causing loss of progress and user frustration.
  • Some key features like note history are paywalled, leading to concerns about subscription cost and feature gating.
  • Importing from apps like Google Keep is problematic with errors, duplicates, and missing media.
  • Android share functionality is broken or non-functional, limiting ease of attaching content to notes.

Note app will now let you download or upload files and can only create one Note.

I have used nearly every note taking app there is. some have a couple features I want, but it doesn't check every box. I want to be able to self-host, support syncing on multiple devices, E2EE on my data, & have a modern interface. SN has it all. the only thing I disagree with is the price. they have to make money I know, I don't mind paying. but for self-host, I don't think it should be a subscription. but this review is for the actual app, performance, & usability. on that it deserves 5 stars.

Decent enough notes app, but most of the interesting and innovative features are hidden behind paid-upgrade tease buttons — and the paid tier is expensive. I do like the option to use both tags and folders, but overall it has a long way to go to catch up with Google Keep or Samsung Notes.
