DSE Biology Review: 540 questions with explanations, 320 vocabulary flashcards, 36 timed practice tests, with one-click switching between English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese, and 15 questions per lesson to try first.
A DSE Biology question: When plant cells are placed in pure water, they become hard and swollen, but do not burst. Which structure directly bears the outward pressure? The DSE Biology Review Materials are independent study tools and are not endorsed, sponsored, or jointly operated by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, the Education Bureau, or the Curriculum Development Council. The answer to this question is the cellulose cell wall. The explanation following the answer will explain the principle of increased pressure when water enters the cell and the cell wall's resistance to expansion; it is this cell wall that prevents the cell from bursting.
Who is it for?
Designed for Form 4 to Form 6 students studying HKDSE Biology. The curriculum and assessment guidelines for Biology published by the Education Bureau are aligned with those for the subject, covering all four compulsory topics and four elective units:
Compulsory Section: 90 questions per lesson
- Cells and Molecules: Molecules, cell tissues, membrane penetration, cell cycle and division, and cellular energy
- Heredity and Evolution: Basic genetics, molecular genetics, and biodiversity and evolution
- Organisms and Environment: Life-sustaining activities of plants and animals, reproduction, growth and development, coordination and response, homeostasis, and ecosystems
- Health and Disease: Personal health, disease, and the body's defense mechanisms
Elective Section: 45 questions per lesson
- Human Physiology (Regulation and Control): Water regulation, thermoregulation, blood gas regulation, and hormonal control of the reproductive cycle
- Applied Ecology: Human impact on the environment, pollution control, conservation, and global issues
- Microorganisms and Humans: Microbiology, utilization of microorganisms, microbial genetics, and harmful effects of microorganisms
- Bioengineering: Modern bioengineering techniques, applications, and bioethics.
All four elective units are included, providing corresponding topics for review regardless of which units your school selected.
Read the notes first, then do the exercises.
Each topic has a key note, divided into three parts: key points, important vocabulary, and common mistakes. The key points section is organized into 6 items per note. Common mistakes list easily confused concepts, such as confusing diffusion and osmosis, not distinguishing between genotype and phenotype, assuming insulin and glucagon have the same function (in fact, one lowers blood sugar and the other raises it), or assuming restriction enzymes are responsible for joining DNA fragments (in fact, restriction enzymes are responsible for cutting, while joining is done by DNA ligases). All eight notes are listed on one page in the note index. After reading the notes, click to access the exercises for the same topic.
540 exercises, each with explanations.
All questions are multiple-choice, with four options. 322 are memory-based questions, and 218 are application-based questions. In terms of difficulty, 153 items are basic, 267 are intermediate, and 120 are more difficult. The practice menu lists the number of questions and progress by topic, allowing you to work through lessons one by one; if you want to combine several topics, use the custom quiz.
- Answers are immediately followed by explanations, explaining why they were right or wrong.
- Incorrect questions are automatically grouped, allowing you to focus on questions you answered incorrectly or haven't tried before.
- Mastery of each topic is displayed as a percentage; you can easily see which lessons need improvement on the homepage.
- Custom quizzes: Choose your topic and number of questions, with a countdown timer.
320 vocabulary cards
40 cards per lesson; tap to flip and see the answers. Rules like DNA base pairing that need to be memorized are suitable for repeated practice with vocabulary cards. The cards also have English and Chinese content; you can switch languages to flip them again, and the English and Chinese spellings of terminology can be compared for memorization.
One-click switching between English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese
Every question, every explanation, and every vocabulary card is available in three languages, easily switchable with a tap on the homepage. If you understand a concept in Chinese but need to answer in English, you can first clarify the concept in your familiar language, then switch back to English to check the terminology.
36-Question Timed Mock Exam
To test your exam pace, take a DSE Biology mock exam: 36 questions, 35 minutes time limit. Questions are drawn according to the weight of each topic: 6 questions each from compulsory Cell and Molecular Biology, Genetics and Evolution, and Biology and Environment; 4 questions from Health and Disease; 4 questions each from elective Human Physiology and Applied Ecology; and 3 questions each from Microbiology and Human and Bioengineering. After completion, only three levels are displayed: "Needs Improvement," "Generally Understand," or "Solid," to help you determine where to focus your review next; no grade prediction is provided.
Here's how to schedule your review:
- Start a new topic: First, read the notes for that lesson, then do the practice questions.
- For questions you got wrong: Redo them from the "Incorrect Questions" section to see if your understanding of the lesson has changed.
- Approaching school exams: Use a customized quiz to mix several topics and start a countdown.
- Check your overall progress: Take a mock exam to see where you are in the grade.
