User Reviews

KidneyDiet is praised for its specialized focus on kidney-related nutrient tracking and helpful features for CKD patients, including a large food database and good customer support. However, users consistently report frustrations with its subscription model, limited and inaccurate food database, usability challenges like barcode scanning and portion editing, and poor cross-device functionality. While the app meets a critical need, improvements in data accuracy, user interface, and pricing structure could greatly enhance its value to kidney patients.
Pros
  • Specifically designed to track kidney-related nutrients like potassium and phosphorus, which is rare in diet apps.
  • Helpful for new CKD patients to understand and manage their diet with clear nutrient information.
  • Ability to create custom foods and meals to fit personal dietary needs.
  • Good customer service that responds promptly to inquiries and issues.
  • Includes a large food database with some obscure items, aiding comprehensive tracking.
Cons
  • App is not free; only offers a 14-day trial before requiring a $5/month subscription, which many users find unfair, especially for those who cannot work due to dialysis.
  • Limited and inaccurate food database—many brand-name items lack key nutrient data, forcing users to create many custom foods.
  • Limited usability and poor user experience: issues with barcode scanner not recognizing items, inability to edit portion sizes easily, duplicate food items, and inability to remove items from diary.
  • Cross-platform and account syncing issues: subscription works only on one platform, and data is not accessible across devices or accounts properly.
  • Clunky layout and design, with some reviewers comparing it to outdated software; limited measurement options and lack of weekly/monthly nutrient summaries.

App is NOT FREE. It gives you a 14-day trial without telling you and then locks all functionality after the 14 days. You have to pay $5 a month to keep using it. And for people on dialasys who can't work, that's not fair. Also, you can only create 20 custom foods, whether you're a paid member or not, which is insane because of how inaccurate the database is. Almost all brand-name items dont have Phosporus, potassium, or water listed, which is all things you can find on the USDAs website.

I'm brand new to CKD having just learned about my condition in the past couple of weeks. Obviously I'm freaking out about what I can and cannot eat, and boy is it tough! I stocked my refrigerator and pantry with foods I know are okay and have been building meals around them, but tracking totals in a spreadsheet is a pain. This app is exactly what I needed! It lets me add foods easily, and I can create custom meals as I make them for daily/weekly preps! 10/10
