Xunzi: The Works of Master Xun

Xunzi is a compilation of the writings of Xun Kuang (Xunzi), a representative of the Confucian school during the late Warring States period, and constitutes an important development of pre-Qin Confucian thought. Xunzi served three times as the most esteemed teacher at the Jixia Academy and later as the Magistrate of Lanling. His doctrine, famously known as the "theory of human nature being evil," stands in contrast to Mencius's "theory of human nature being good," emphasizing the decisive role of ritual propriety, moral education, and后天 (acquired) cultivation in shaping character.

The book consists of thirty-two chapters, all of which survive to this day, systematically expounding on ideas such as the distinction between Heaven and humanity, the exaltation of ritual and law, the rectification of names, and the removal of obscuration. Xunzi argues that "human nature is evil; goodness is acquired through deliberate effort," and thus it is necessary to correct one's nature through ritual and law, transforming nature through deliberate exertion. In political thought, he advocates for exalting ritual and law, honoring the worthy, and employing the capable, integrating Confucian moral ideals with Legalist institutional concepts, exerting a profound influence on Han dynasty classical studies and political practice. His disciples, Han Fei and Li Si, both emerged from Xunzi's school, demonstrating the deep impact of his thought on Legalism.

The literary style of Xunzi is grand and expansive, adept at using metaphors and parallelism. It includes philosophical masterpieces such as "Encouraging Learning," "Discourse on Heaven," and "Discourse on Rectification," as well as literary works like "Fu Pian." Famous passages, such as "Blue is extracted from the indigo plant, yet is bluer than indigo" and "Without accumulating half steps, one cannot reach a thousand li," have become inspirational maxims in Chinese culture.

As a crucial link in the transition of Confucian thought from the pre-Qin period to the Han dynasty, Xunzi showcases the Confucian school's deep reflections on the complexities of real-world politics and human nature. Reading this book allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the diverse debates in ancient China concerning education, ritual and law, human nature, and state governance.
