Meng Zi: Mencius

Mencius is a work recording the words and deeds of the Warring States period thinker Meng Ke (Mencius) and his disciples. It is an important Confucian classic, often paired with The Analects as the teachings of "Confucius and Mencius." Mencius inherited and developed Confucius's thought, renowned for his doctrines of "the goodness of human nature," "benevolent governance," and "the people are most important, the ruler is the least." Honored by later generations as the "Second Sage," his ideas profoundly influenced Chinese political philosophy and moral ideals.

The book consists of seven chapters in fourteen volumes, written in dialogue form. Its style is eloquent and powerful, skillfully employing metaphors and logical reasoning. Famous chapters such as "King Hui of Liang," "Gongsun Chou," "Gaozi," and "Jinxin" expound on concepts like the "Four Sprouts of the Heart," the "Flood-like Vital Force," and "choosing righteousness over life." It emphasizes that rulers should practice benevolent governance and share the people's joys, advancing the political ethic that "the people are most important, the state next, and the ruler the least," a milestone in the history of Chinese thought.

Mencius engaged in fierce debates with contemporaries such as Gaozi, Yang Zhu, and Mozi. His distinction between the "Kingly Way" and the "Hegemonic Way," along with his emphasis on the debate over righteousness versus profit, established the moral high ground of Confucianism in addressing real-world politics. In the Song dynasty, Zhu Xi included Mencius in the "Four Books" and wrote Collected Commentaries on Mencius, making it a compulsory text for scholars.
