User Reviews

OpenSnow is praised for its accurate, detailed snow forecasts and a user-friendly, customizable interface useful for both winter and summer outdoor activities. Users appreciate customer support and regular enhancements. However, the transition to a $30 yearly subscription has disappointed many, with complaints about reduced free content, high cost, and interface changes that hinder quick information access. Some also note inconsistencies in snow data and wish for extra features like widgets and base depth display. Overall, it's valued by outdoor enthusiasts but the pricing and UI changes divide opinions.
Pros
  • Highly accurate and detailed snow and weather forecasts tailored to ski resorts and outdoor activities.
  • User-friendly interface with customizable features like favoriting ski areas and multiple map overlays.
  • Useful year-round functionality including winter snow reports and summer weather aspects like smoke and air quality.
  • Effective customer support and continuous app improvements with added features over time.
  • Subscription offers an ad-free experience and supports a dedicated team of passionate meteorologists.
Cons
  • The shift to a subscription model with a $30 annual fee is unpopular, seen as expensive and restrictive by some users.
  • Some users experience dissatisfaction with amount of free content post-subscription introduction, feeling less is available now.
  • Criticism of app layout changes requiring excessive scrolling and reduced at-a-glance info compared to previous UI versions.
  • Concerns over inconsistent data presentation and occasional exaggeration in snow reporting by ski resorts reflected in the app.
  • Desire for additional features such as home screen widgets and display of base depth without switching tabs.

I’d rate OpenSnow with a 5.0. It is by now my “go-to” weather app. I started with just using it for forecasting snow, but now I am using it for purposes far beyond skiing - a must-have for outdoor activities. If I were in my younger days, I'd be stoked to study and get a PhD in Meteorology because of this app. May I suggest an additional map layer with Bortle Scale?

Absolutely the best way to track storms for the winter. The forecasts and reports are unmatched. If you live in a mountain town or plan ski trips every weekend I can't recommend this enough
