Author: Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr, Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Ubayd ibn Sufyan ibn Qays al-Baghdadi al-Qurashi, a freedman of the Banu Umayya (208 AH - 281 AH), nicknamed Ibn Abi al-Dunya (a nickname that became more commonly used than his given name). Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr was born in Baghdad in the early third century AH, in the year 208 AH. He was an Arab historian and educator who tutored the Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tadid and his son al-Muktafi Billah. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir, may God have mercy on him, said of him in "Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah" (The Beginning and the End): "He was famous for his numerous, beneficial, widely circulated, and widely known works on spiritual matters and other subjects. He was truthful, a memorizer of hadith, and a man of integrity."

"Ikrimah said: 'Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, sends down water from the seventh heaven, and a single drop falls upon the cloud the size of a camel.'"
Ka'b said: "The clouds are the sieve of the rain, and were it not for the clouds, whatever falls upon the earth would be spoiled."
Ibn Abbas said: "When rain comes from the sky, the shells open up and become pearls."
Abu Hurayrah said: "No raindrop ever fell except in a measured way, except during the time of Noah, peace be upon him." On the authority of Hakim ibn Jabir, regarding the verse: {He Who brings forth what is hidden in the heavens and the earth}, he said: It is rain.

On the authority of Ad-Dahhak, he said: Al-Muzn is clouds.
On the authority of Salm al-Alawi, he said: We were with Anas when a man said: It is a sign of rain. Anas replied: It is obedient to its Lord. Ibn Abbas said: “No year has more rain than another, but God Almighty directs it as He wills.”
Ibn Abbas said: “The black clouds are the rain, and the white clouds are the dew, which ripens the fruits.”
Moses said: “O Lord, this rain does not fall, and when it falls, it is not beneficial.” He said: “It is due to the prevalence of adultery and the widespread practice of usury.” Abu Bakrah said: "When it rains in Basra, it rains all over the world."
Umar ibn al-Khattab said: "Tremors are caused by the prevalence of adultery, and drought is caused by corrupt judges and unjust rulers."
On the authority of Sa'id: {And in the heaven is your provision and what you are promised} [Adh-Dhariyat: 22], he said: "Snow, and every spring [Sad: 91] is made of snow." "When Al-Hasan saw the clouds, he would say: 'By God, in these is your sustenance, but you are deprived of it because of your sins and transgressions.'"
