The stomach is the wellspring of desires and the source of diseases and afflictions. If a person were to humble themselves through permissible hunger, thereby restricting the pathways of Satan, they would submit to the obedience of God Almighty. Hunger has benefits, including softening and purifying the heart, humility, and submission, among others. This book, by the esteemed scholar Ibn Abi al-Dunya, discusses the hunger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his companions, and those who followed them. The book is a biographical work, and the editor has added headings according to the biographies, numbered the paragraphs, and included general indexes to facilitate reading and benefiting from the book.

The author: Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr, Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Ubayd ibn Sufyan ibn Qays al-Baghdadi al-Qurashi, a freedman of the Banu Umayya (208 AH - 281 AH), nicknamed Ibn Abi al-Dunya (a nickname that became more commonly used than his given name). Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr was born in Baghdad in the early third century AH, in the year 208 AH. He was an Arab historian and educator who tutored the Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tadid and his son al-Muktafi Billah. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir, may God have mercy on him, said of him in Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah: "He was famous for his numerous, beneficial, widely circulated, and widely known works on matters of spiritual refinement and other subjects. He was truthful, a memorizer of hadith, and a man of integrity."

❇️ Some Reviews of Ibn Abi al-Dunya's Book on Hunger ❇️

- At first, I thought it was a study of hunger within its natural limits and its relationship to individual productivity, but it's much more beautiful. It's a picture of the life of the Prophet and his companions regarding food. What will undoubtedly strike you is that he could have lived a life of luxury and extravagance, but he preferred a life where he was a true leader, living like everyone else, rather than a life that wasn't his. Unfortunately, how pathetic is the state of some preachers who live as a burden on those around them under the pretext of carrying the burden of the nation.

- The book is light yet full of wisdom. You will be amazed by their profound piety. You might see it as something ordinary, like leaving a meal you craved to give to the nearest poor person you see, leaving it as if you had more. Or even some situations where they were deeply afraid that God would question them about their luxuries and comforts because they ate only small morsels. The book consists of hadiths and stories from the lives of the Companions and their followers, all revolving around hunger.

Ithar Nabil

- The book "Hunger" is a collection of hadiths and stories related to the benefits of hunger and the drawbacks of overeating. It also presents selections from the lives of prominent Islamic figures of that era and their perspectives on the book's subject.

Jaffar

- Hunger and overeating have a philosophy, which this book discusses through prophetic hadiths and the stances of the Companions and righteous people towards hunger. Hadeer Tarek

- I was truly amazed by the accounts of the Companions, the Successors, and some of the early Muslims and their views on food. These accounts might seem exaggerated to us in an era where food is a subject of study, a profession, a competitive arena for companies and chefs, and a source of images on all social media platforms. However, they will undoubtedly change your perspective on all of this, especially if you are reading this book during Ramadan, as I did. What's even more astonishing is that such a comprehensive book is written on such a topic. It immediately strikes you as remarkable how meticulous the early Muslims were in their knowledge of everything, even something as seemingly permissible as food.

"Excessive food kills the heart, just as excessive water kills crops."

"He who controls his stomach controls all good deeds."

"No servant experiences hunger except that God replaces his hunger with wisdom and piety."

"Excessive food weighs down its possessor from many of his desires."

"Aisha said: 'The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, never ate his fill of bread for three consecutive days until he passed away.'"

"Umar said: 'Indeed... I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spend the day writhing in hunger, not having enough dates to fill his stomach.

Umar ibn al-Khattab said: O Muhajirun (emigrants), do not frequently visit the people of this world, for it diminishes your sustenance.

He said Al-Hasan said: “It used to be considered shameful for a Muslim to be told, ‘You are gluttonous!’”
