Features & Capabilities

Nanoloop is a comprehensive mobile music creation tool that combines a sequencer, synthesizer, and sampler in one optimized package. Designed for smooth performance on a wide range of mobile devices, including older and low-end phones and tablets, it features a customizable interface with adjustable font/icon sizes and color schemes.

Users benefit from an easy-to-use step sequencer for rhythm and melody, automatable parameters across 8 channels (each working as a synth or sampler), and the ability to load or record samples via microphone. Nanoloop supports polyphonic FM, PWM, and noise synthesis, with features like sample trimming, re-sampling, and song editing with looping. Projects can be shared via email and exported in WAV or Ogg Vorbis formats, with integration for Dropbox and SoundCloud when installed. Notably, it works offline after initial license verification, making it ideal for mobile music production on the go.

User Reviews

Users appreciate Nanoloop's intuitive yet powerful design for creating electronic and chiptune music, praising its unique workflow and sound engines. Common issues include touch responsiveness problems, playback latency on modern devices, and a missing or hard-to-find tutorial/manual which hampers initial learning. While bugs and recent update changes have frustrated some, the app is still valued for its creative potential and portability, making it a favored tool for musicians to create loops and experiment with sound on Android.
Pros
  • Intuitive and fun interface once learned, especially suited for music creation on the go.
  • Powerful and versatile sound engines including pulse width modulation, FM synthesis, noise, and sampling capabilities.
  • Effective for creating chiptune-style music and loops, similar to pocket operator hardware.
  • Lightweight and minimalist design with a focus on creativity and experimental music.
  • Integration of sample recording via the microphone and easy loop creation workflow.
Cons
  • Touch screen responsiveness issues on the sequencer grid causing difficulties in pitch changes and pattern programming.
  • Performance delays, particularly noticeable on newer phones causing latency between play head and audio, affecting jamming experience.
  • Lack of detailed tutorials or manuals within the app makes initial learning curve steeper.
  • Some bugs, such as "meta step" malfunction and missing features like per-channel panning or advanced editing options.
  • Recent updates caused unintuitive functionality changes, such as sample/project management and occasional app crashes.

Love it its simple and fun to mess with using the touch interface. There are basically no other music apps that use the touch interface this well. I love it for making little sound effects, and I've made all my ringtones and notification sounds in this app.

Minimalist interface sequencer: it plays 8 channels, with 16 steps each, from 8 patterns (or 16 in banks mode). The channels can be one of PWM, FM, Noise or Sampler (in banks mode there are 4 variation). Per step sound design, re-sample, mute, two 4-patterns, or one 8-patterns looping modes and a song-mode, to set patterns for the 8 channels in a 16 lines by 16 pages grid. Short of 5 stars, for the bugs of "meta step" not working in Loop Mode and not able to copy/paste single line in Song Mode.
