The Local Beacon

The Local Beacon is a local almanac for towns around the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. It covers Havre de Grace, Aberdeen, Bel Air, Cecil County, Kent Island and Annapolis. Choose your community once and the app opens there every time.

The Today tab lists what is on in your community, with the listings still to come at the top. Under the date, one line draws your community's own sky: today's sunset before dark, tomorrow's sunrise after dark, and tonight's moon once the sun is down. Every community reads its own sun and moon. Listings refresh through the day, and you can pull down to refresh them yourself.

EXPLORE

Search the local directory by name or street address and filter by category. Switch to events and search the calendar by date, using presets for today, tomorrow and the next 7, 14 or 30 days, or set your own range. Open a place for its address, published hours, a call button and directions.

BEACON HUB

The Hub is the index of what the Beacon publishes for your community: guides, trails, the weekly edition, Beacon Wire stories, the archive, the journal, photographs, videos and the cameras. Search it by name. The featured card follows your home community.

NORTH EAST FIELD GUIDE

The Cecil County field guide opens as a map or as an index. Each stop carries Beacon field photography, the details of the place, and the events tied to it.

Beacon Challenges are small tasks set at real local places, including the hidden ones. Browse them by community.

MY EVENING

Save an event and it waits for you in My evening. Set an optional reminder on a saved event and your phone schedules it. Saved plans stay on your device unless you sign in, and then they follow your signed in Beacon devices.

FOR BUSINESS OWNERS

Sign in with your Beacon account to reach the businesses connected to it. Better Together finds other local businesses whose events line up with yours, opens a private conversation with the ones you connect with, works up a shared plan, and prepares an invitation you can both approve and share.

Browsing takes no account. Sign in only if you hold a Beacon business or editorial account. The app is free and there is nothing to buy.
