FMPS

GIS-enabled mobile app for forest monitoring and patrolling operations.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Under the RECAP4NDC Project, we developed a mobile application called the Forest Patrolling and Monitoring System, an integrated geospatial field-monitoring system for the Gujarat Forest Department. The application assists forest officials in monitoring changes in forest cover, tracking patrol activities, navigating forest coupes, and documenting field observations using real-time GIS and GPS technologies. It provides a secure login system with multilingual support (English and Gujarati), making it convenient for field staff across different regions.
The application includes an advanced Forest Cover Monitoring module that allows users to select the Forest Type, Circle, Division, Range, Round, Beat Name, and Month from dropdown menus to visualize changes in forest cover. Interactive map features enable users to inspect degraded patches, view their properties, switch between different map types, display map legends, and track their movement using GPS-based navigation with a real-time compass and altitude indicator. By clicking a red-colored degraded grid, users can view NDVI values for the selected month compared with the previous month. Additionally, users can view the degraded location on the map along with the distance from their current location.
The Patrolling module enables geo-tagged field data collection by recording the patrol type, staff details, geo-tagged photographs, timestamps, travel distance, travel duration, and GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude). During patrolling, users can capture multiple photographs with notes, while the application automatically records the patrol route and duration. All patrolling data is stored offline and can be synchronized with the central server once an internet connection becomes available, ensuring uninterrupted field operations even in remote forest areas. After synchronization, the patrolling records are automatically reflected on the Forest Patrolling and Monitoring Web Portal, where authorized officials, such as the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), can monitor the patrolling activities for their respective divisions.
The application also includes a Coupe Navigation module that helps users locate selected forest coupes, calculate distances from their current location, display travel routes, and visualize coupe boundaries and properties directly on the map. Additionally, the Activities module allows users to capture general field photographs with location, date, time, and notes, store them within the application, and manage saved records. Profile management, application version information, language switching, and logout functionality are also provided, making the application a comprehensive digital platform for modern forest management and geospatial decision support.
