The CURT Echo™ (#51180) is a Bluetooth-enabled, mobile brake control that allows you to control and monitor the activity of your trailer brakes using your smartphone and this downloadable app. The device simply plugs in between the vehicle-trailer 7-way wiring connection and uses Bluetooth to sync with your phone.

Download the Smart Control app to set up your smartphone as the trailer brake control interface for the CURT Echo™. With it you can adjust maximum braking power and sensitivity while towing. It also shows diagnostic information like overload conditions and trailer-disconnect errors. For added control and safety while towing, the Smart Control app provides a button to manually override braking and activate the trailer brakes whenever necessary.

With the compact design and plug-and-play installation of the CURT Echo™, it is a highly portable brake control. It is designed to be easily transferred from one vehicle-trailer combination to another. As such, the app allows you to store up to five user profiles, each with its own personalized settings.

The Smart Control app does not need to be open for the CURT Echo™ mobile brake control to function normally. The app can be closed, and the Echo™ will use the previously selected profile settings to determine maximum braking and brake aggressiveness.

Pros

Functionally does what it says and technically works well on some devices.
Relatively easy to install and pair with the trailer brake.
Offers multiple profiles for different towing conditions.
Useful as a portable controller without needing a permanent installation.

Cons

Frequent connectivity issues and Bluetooth drops.
Confusing and annoying app design with excessive warnings and prompts.
Inconsistent performance with the controller applying full brakes unexpectedly.
Manual recalibration required in specific situations, particularly on uneven ground.

No notifications that you switched to a new app? Half way through a 1500 mile trip it just stopped working properly. I disconnected everything and reinstalled the app - only to find out I now need a new app. Once the new app (OneControl Auto) was installed it worked normally. Not a fan of having to register with the new app and having to allow it use my location. There is no benefit to me - so now I guess I'm the product. I'll be upgrading to a hard line system, from someone else due to this.

Very disappojnted in the app and the hardware. Together, there is a constant error or hangups or problem. Always as 1 to 3 second latency to react. After thousands of miles, it only really works right about 10% of the time and NEVER able to manual brake when really need it. It does brake (at least most of the time, as sometimes really hard to tell under heavy load). The app freezes and bluetooth looses connection, they cant find each other for pairing, and other error messages happen.

Relatively easy to install and pair to the trailer brake, though I can see why some were baffled. During pairing, the app reports "connection failed" and the instructions don't mention that a background notification will appear asking for the pin to pair. Once I figure that out, the connection was solid. Brakes worked with the app and everything reconnected easily when I got back in the car for a second day of driving. One star off for poor directions.
