Overview

Features & Capabilities

Debian Noroot offers a way to install the Debian Buster distribution with the lightweight Xfce desktop environment on your Android device without needing root access. This compatibility layer, based on PRoot, allows users to run user-land Debian applications seamlessly using just 1.2 GB of internal storage.

While it is not a full official Debian OS release and certain root-dependent tools like Wireshark or Aircrack-ng will not function, it supports many popular packages such as Synaptic, GIMP, Inkscape, Clementine, Chromium, VLC, and Audacity. Users can easily install new packages via the terminal using standard apt commands. Note that some applications requiring OpenGL or heavier resources may not work properly. For enhanced mobility and input precision, using a mouse or stylus is recommended.

User Reviews

Reviewers consistently praise having a portable Debian/Linux environment on Android and occasional device compatibility, but report frequent crashes, outdated Debian, and limited package installation due to apt/permission issues. Updated Debian and broader device support are common requests.
Pros
  • Provides a Debian/Linux environment on Android for running Linux apps on the go.
  • Can run on some devices (e.g., Redmi s2) and is used for Linux on the go.
  • Easy to install (per some users).
  • Supports running Linux apps alongside other Android/Linux tools (e.g., Andronix) and is a convenient option.
  • Enables running Linux apps like MilkyTracker on the go.
Cons
  • App frequently fails to start or crashes, including during installation of Chrome, Synaptic, or Chromium.
  • Debian version appears outdated and apt/updates no longer work, hindering installation of newer apps.
  • Device compatibility issues vary by device and ROM (e.g., Pixel Experience 12.0, Onn tablet, HarmonyOS).
  • Server/update issues (fakehost, server closed) disrupt updates and usage.
  • Permission or sandbox limitations (e.g., sudo permission denied for .sh scripts) prevent installing or running software.
