FWIW I've used it during emergencies and disasters for geographic awareness, mobile connection necessary though, yet I haven't tested how it works if I download maps beforehand. GPS satellites' position on the sky may seem pretty much academic, but it's an effective feature especially when traveling the backcountry. When using it for geographical awareness, better if you choose landscape for backcountry and 3-D buildings for urban environment.
