Features & Capabilities

GPSTest is an open-source GNSS/GPS application for Android that provides real-time satellite information without ads or trackers. It is an essential tool for platform engineers, developers, and advanced users who want to analyze and diagnose GNSS/GPS performance on their devices.

The app supports dual-frequency GNSS for multiple satellite constellations including GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, QZSS, BeiDou, and IRNSS/NavIC, as well as various satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS). Users can measure actual location accuracy against device-estimated accuracy, giving deeper insight into positioning errors. Features also include injection of assistance data (Time and PSDS), clearing assist data, customizable settings, and map views (requiring Google Play Services).

GPSTest is available on Google Play Store and F-Droid, with an active community and open-source code on GitHub, making it a versatile tool for anyone looking to explore GNSS technologies on Android devices.

User Reviews

GPSTest is praised for being ad-free, having a clean UI, and providing accurate GPS data with fast fixes, including geoid-aware altitude and a true north compass. It’s also valued as a free, lightweight, feature-rich tool with map integration and dual GNSS support. Repeated concerns involve reliability (not working properly) and UI/UX consistency, plus map-related limitations (Google Maps-based with limited zoom/controls). Overall, it’s seen as useful and clutter-free, but reliability and some design/map drawbacks are common criticisms.
Pros
  • Ad-free experience with no advertising or sponsorships
  • Clean, minimalistic UI that is easy to read and navigate
  • Accurate GPS data with fast position and altitude fixes, including geoid-aware MSL altitude and true north compass
  • Free to use, lightweight, and feature-rich
  • Useful features like Google Maps integration and support for dual GNSS frequency
Cons
  • Reliability issues: reports of not working properly or app crashes
  • Mixed UI experience: some reviews call the UI atrocious or not user-friendly
  • Map limitations: uses Google Maps and lacks useful zoom/interaction controls in some cases

I installed the app on both a Samsung Galaxy S25 and a Google Pixel 6. The app said SBAS satellites were not available on both devices. Why? I'm in Australia.
