Lumera: Letters & Reading

Behind every prison door is someone who still belongs to a family.

He or she might be a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a sibling — or the person a child misses most.

When someone enters prison, they lose more than their freedom. They may also lose the chance to share life with family, to express care, and to be present for one another.

But time doesn't stop.

Children grow up. Parents grow older. Life goes on. And distance, time, and circumstance can slowly wear connections thin.

No wall should ever be the end of a relationship.

That's why Lumera exists.

Helping families stay connected

Lumera is a platform designed for electronic letter correspondence between incarcerated individuals and their families.

Within the rules allowed by the relevant prison and correctional authorities, family members can send electronic letters and reading materials through Lumera to stay connected with their loved one inside.

Share an update, send your thoughts, offer encouragement — or simply let them know:

"We still remember you."

A letter may not change reality, but it can let someone know they haven't been forgotten by their family.

More than letters — companionship too

Lumera also provides reading content and materials, so that words can offer companionship beyond just correspondence.

We also provide multilingual translation support, making it easier for family members who speak different languages to express themselves and understand one another.

What we're really protecting isn't just a letter

What we truly want to protect is what distance and time so easily take away:

Still loved.
Still remembered.
Still belonging.

Staying connected isn't just comforting for someone in prison — it genuinely helps. Research shows that maintaining family contact can significantly lower reoffending rates after release (by more than 30% in some studies), and can help someone stay connected to society while incarcerated, preparing them for reintegration.

Our name is Lumera.

A quiet light, walking alongside you through life's darkest paths.

Not to erase yesterday, but to light the way to tomorrow.

We believe real change doesn't have to begin the day someone walks out of prison.

It can begin earlier —

from the moment they're still able to stay connected with the people who love them.

Because every letter carries more than words — it carries a connection.

Every letter carries words. Lumera carries light.
