Automatic Reader View Firefox

Automatic Reader View

Automatically load webpages in Firefox's Reader View – as the default for the websites you specify.

Features & Capabilities

Automatic Reader View is a Firefox extension that automatically loads webpages in Firefox's Reader View based on your specified list of websites. If you frequently use Firefox's Reader View for certain sites, this add-on saves you the hassle of clicking the Reader View button each time by opening those pages clutter-free by default.

You can configure the extension to open either entire websites or specific subsections in Reader View. Additionally, there's an option to attempt loading reader mode for all webpages by default, while excluding certain sites from this behavior. Note that Firefox only supports Reader View on compatible pages, and this extension respects those limitations. Automatic Reader View currently supports desktop Firefox with ongoing support for Firefox on Android as APIs evolve. Adjust your preferences in the add-on options page for a seamless, distraction-free reading experience.

User Reviews

Users like that the add-on automatically and reliably opens Reader View on desktop, saving time and simplifying reading. Major recurring problems are lack of Android/mobile support, difficulty exiting Reader View (it often forces you back), unreliable or hard-to-use whitelist/exception controls, and occasional site-specific compatibility issues.
Pros
  • Automatically opens pages in Reader View when available (works well on desktop).
  • Saves time and provides a convenient, focused reading experience — simple and effective.
  • Multiple users describe it as reliable and “works flawlessly” in typical use cases.
Cons
  • Does not reliably work on mobile/Android (several users report no support on Firefox for Android).
  • No reliable way to stay out of normal mode — manual switches back to normal often immediately revert to Reader View.
  • Whitelist/exception handling is unreliable or cumbersome; adding sites requires navigating extension options (users want a quick in-page button).
  • Site-specific compatibility issues reported (e.g., Disqus, some news sites, and certain search pages).
Recent reviews
I do think the extension is useful for desktop, and turns the pages fast into read mode. The always-turn-into-read-mode is very useful to stop wandering the web and also to focus more while reading. Even so, sometimes when I close the read mode the page loads again and triggers the read mode again. The site list could be improved to detect subdomains, like for bandcamp and so on. I think going open source would be the best decision, but still, thanks for the extension!

Doesn't work in Firefox 140.9.0esr. Another redirector extension also did the same thing when trying to go to the reader URL.
