Features & Capabilities

A long time ago computers didn't have graphics. All they could do was show green characters on a black screen or black characters on white paper.

But programmers were resourceful. They discovered that if you filled the screen with certain characters and squinted you could sort of make out a picture. Thus ASCII art was born.

The ASCII cam application lets you view the world as ASCII art using the camera on an Android device. Characters are displayed as green-on-black, white-on-black, or, for that line printer look, as dark-grey-on-white.

Short of simulating clay tablets or papyrus, this is as old-school as it gets.

Pictures can be saved as either PNG images or text files.

User Reviews

Menu only appears on first launch and does not reappear until a force close on my pixel 6 pro. Seems to only work in landscape. Cannot locate txt files when saving as text.

[EDIT] Cool App, yet it has drawbacks as follows: 1. It completely doesn't support Android 13. Tested on S22 Ultra running Android 13. 2. No advanced ASCII Settings: No chars combination choices and No chars density settings, 3. The captured ASCII Image (PNG) & ASCII Text (TXT) files are placed a bit deeper in Android (System) Data folder, that's why my Gallery Apps cannot find them, so I have to find & dig them up manually. "Internal Mem/Pictures/ASCIICam" path would be better IMO. Thanks
