CrashKit: Car Accident Guide

The worst moment to work out what to do after a car accident is while you're standing on the side of the road.

CrashKit walks you through it one step at a time, in the order that matters. It starts where it should: is anyone hurt, call 911, get out of the traffic lane. Only then does it ask you to photograph anything, and it asks first whether you are clear of traffic, because no photo is worth being hit by the next car.

Your photos, notes, voice memo and everyone's details are saved on your device. We have no copy, so there is nothing on our side for anyone to leak, sell or demand. Information leaves your phone only when you send it: when you email your report, text a tow company, or share it with a body shop. You press the button every time. When you search for a nearby tow truck or hospital, your location goes to a map search service to find results.

Being straight about the limit of that: what's on your phone is still your own record. If you make a claim or go to court, a judge can order you to hand it over, the same as any photo you take yourself. Write your notes knowing the other side may read them one day.

SET IT UP ON A CALM DAY

Put your vehicle, policy number, insurer's claims line and an emergency contact in once. Then on the worst day, nobody is typing a policy number at the roadside. Parents: set it up on a new driver's phone and put yourself in as the emergency contact. Their safety screen will show a Call button with your name on it.

WORKS WHEN THE SIGNAL DOESN'T

Documenting a crash (the steps, the camera, the notes, your record) needs no signal at all. Finding a nearby tow truck or hospital does.
