You have to wait until the video bar has finished loading (dark green bar is filled with white) before you can play a gif. You can play/pause, increase/decrease speed in a x0.25 step (max is x5, min is x0.25) and do a frame step. Sadly, video bar can't be used to jump to a different time frame, but being able to increase speed to 5x to get there is better than nothing.
