Popup Blocker (strict)

Strictly block all popup requests from any website

Popup Blocker (strict) is a free, open-source Chrome extension designed to strictly block all popup and popunder requests from websites before they open. Unlike traditional ad blockers, it intercepts window opening requests directly on the original page, stopping popups from appearing rather than closing them after the fact. It supports blocking methods including window.open(), links with target=_blank, and form submissions.

Users receive badge counts and optional page notifications when popups are blocked, with options to deny, allow, open in background, or redirect to the requested source. The extension learns from prior decisions on visited sites to automatically allow or deny popup requests. It complements ad blockers like uBlock Origin by focusing solely on popup management. Additional features include customizable keyboard shortcuts, silent mode for notifications, whitelisting sites, and full offline operation with no server-side data exchange.

User reviews

Popup Blocker (strict) is praised for effectively blocking nearly all pop-ups and being lightweight and easy to use. Users appreciate its ability to manage filters and prevent unwanted ad tabs. However, it fails on some major sites like YouTube and occasionally causes extra pop-ups or redirects. It also faces issues with bot detection systems, and some users need to adjust settings for best results. Overall, it's well-regarded as one of the best popup blockers on the store, but with some limitations on specific sites and use cases.
Pros
  • Effectively blocks almost all pop-ups and popup websites.
  • Lightweight and minimalistic, easy to use with straightforward functionality.
  • Allows managing popup filters, including removing accidentally allowed pop-ups.
  • Helps prevent ads from opening new tabs and supports learning to reduce blocking notifications.
  • Highly recommended by users for blocking redirects and popup ads.
Cons
  • Does not work on some specific websites such as YouTube and watchseriestv.blog.
  • Some users experience that it causes additional pop-ups or unclear behavior with pop-ups.
  • Issues with bot detection systems like ReCaptcha and Cloudflare interfere with usage.
  • Occasionally causes the original browsing tab to redirect unexpectedly.
  • Requires specific settings (e.g., 'Do not block pop-up requests from the same origin') for optimal performance.

This is easily one of THE best extension on the webstore, does EXACTLY what it says and it's super lightweight, almost minimalistic, yet it's straight to the point pop-up blocker with any function or option you could imagine. 10/10.
