Tule (Schoenoplectus acutus) along the Columbia River in winter. These reeds were used extensively by Indians for mats and the outside covering of houses. Since the building of dams there are very few places along the river with these reeds, as the old riparian areas that they grew so well in were flooded.

Native to western North America and closely related to the European Mahonia's that you can buy in stores- Oregon Grape leaves turn beautiful shades of orange and red in fall, winter and early spring. The leaves don't fall off, but the grace the plant until new growth happens in spring.

Barestem biscuitroot or Indian parsley seedlings in early spring- east Cascades, Washington State. Plants in this family and genera when blooming looks like carrots, except this one has yellow flowers instead of white. The leaves are high in vitamin C and were used by Native Americans for fresh greens and seasoning. It tastes like very strong parsley.
