GEMS: Symposium

The GEMS Symposium is an annual conference that gathers over 400 delegates from both the private and public sector and comprise a cross-section of key players in the health facilitation and support industries. This includes GEMS stakeholders, industry partners, service providers, government department human resource practitioners, healthcare industry experts, ministers as well as members of the community.

GEMS has traveled a complex yet purposeful journey, not relenting in our pursuit for affordable and accessible quality healthcare for all. Our 'coordinated care' and 'specialist referral' methodology is proof of our commitment to sustainable healthcare outcomes. Eliminating fraud, waste and abuse has been an integral part of this goal for the Scheme and we have great results to show from this.

Purpose

Features of National Health Insurance (NHI)
The National Development Plan calls for a health system which provides quality healthcare to all by 2030. The National Health Insurance (NHI) is the vehicle which will deliver it to all South Africans.

These are some key features of the NHI:
- All South Africans will have access to an equal set of quality comprehensive healthcare services regardless of race, income or location.
- NHI will be structured to pay for healthcare costs on behalf of the population.
- Using NHI services will protect you from out-of-pocket healthcare expenses that cause financial hardship.
- You will have access to healthcare services closest to where you live.
