A purple ribbon winds through the night void, and a shining orb rolls along it. One finger is all it takes: drag sideways and the orb slides toward the rim, let go and it settles back. The road gathers speed on its own, and there is no brake.
The deck banks on every turn, pulling the orb toward the edge — hold it steady with a precise lean. There are holes in the deck: some bite the rim away, others split the ribbon into two arms, and you must pick your lane before the fork. Slip over the edge or drop through a hole and the run is over; reach the end of the ribbon and you are crowned.
Crowns lie right beside the drops and on the risky halves of the forks — they go to those who ride the edge. The score is counted in paces: the farther you roll, the higher the title, from page all the way to sovereign at fourteen hundred paces.
Inside are twelve honours for first and record deeds, a ledger with the stats of every ride — paces, crowns, speed, the last processions — and a collection of twelve true stories about real royal regalia, from the Cullinan diamond to the Stone of Scone.
A run takes a couple of minutes, and the speed forgives no lapse in focus. The ribbon is laid out — how far will your procession go?
