Window Titler

Label your windows and profiles using custom window titles.

Window Titler is a powerful Firefox extension that allows you to customize the title of your browser windows and profiles. This helps in better organization and quick identification of open windows directly from the operating system's window list, task switcher, or the browser's title bar.

To use Window Titler, click its toolbar button or press the default shortcut <kbd>Ctrl+Alt+T</kbd>. You can set profile-specific titles via the extension's settings. Note that Firefox's title bar is disabled by default, but it can be enabled easily through Firefox's customization options.

Window Titler requires permission to access recently closed tabs to maintain your custom titles even after browser restarts. It is open source and welcomes feedback, contributions, and bug reports through its GitHub repository.

Enhance your Firefox experience by labeling your windows clearly and efficiently with Window Titler.

User reviews

Users appreciate Window Titler for effectively setting and remembering custom window titles with customization options that enhance tab and window management. However, a common complaint is the loss of titles after restarts or during usage, particularly on Linux where shortcut conflicts and missing toolbar icons occur. The add-on seems to lack ongoing development, leaving bugs unaddressed. Despite minor glitches like delayed title setting and limitations in Firefox integration, it remains a valuable tool for users needing differentiated window titles.
Pros
  • Effectively sets custom window titles as desired by the user.
  • Remembers and restores titles between sessions for many users.
  • Provides customizable features such as keyboard shortcuts and title formatting.
  • Works well across multiple operating systems including Mac and Linux (with some exceptions).
  • Helps improve window and tab management, especially for users with many tabs or windows.
Cons
  • Titles sometimes get lost or missing after restart or during use, leading to loss of custom window titles.
  • Incompatibility or conflicts with Linux desktop environments, particularly with default keyboard shortcuts and missing toolbar icons on Linux/KDE.
  • Developer appears to have abandoned the add-on, leading to unaddressed bugs and lack of updates.
  • Titles may not be set immediately upon window creation, causing flickering or brief inconsistencies.
  • Custom titles do not appear in Firefox's 'Recently Closed Windows' menu, limiting some usability.

Works like a charm. (Titles are restored after closing a window or even killing firefox completely. I didn’t try a reboot yet.)

Extension safety

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Window Titler does not require any sensitive permissions.

Risk impact analysis details
    Risk likelihood
Risk likelihood measures the probability that a Firefox add-on may turn malicious. This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on Firefox Browser Add-ons, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been around, and other signals about the Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.

Window Titler has earned a fairly good reputation and likely can be trusted.
