WebMemex Firefox

WebMemex

By: Gerben
A browser extension that lets you grow your personal web of knowledge. Currently it lets you store pages you visited, and search through them.

Features & Capabilities

This extension takes a step towards turning the browser into an offline-first knowledge management tool. It can store snapshots of web pages you visit on your computer by 'freeze-drying' them: removing scripts and thus most interactive behaviour, but inlining all images and stylesheets to let you save the page exactly the way you saw it.

Usage

To store a page, press the extension's button (usually found next to the address bar). To view all pages you stored and search through them, open the overview; either from the button's popup, or by pressing Ctrl+Y (if it works on your system, shortcuts seem to be a bit flaky).

Privacy perfect

This extension is completely local, it never sends or contacts anything. Snapshotted pages are stored inside the extension (you can also save them as html files). When viewed, such a stored page does not make any connections or execute any scripts.

User Reviews

This seemed like the perfect extension for cataloging offline web pages until... After saving around 100 pages, every attempted save thereafter results in: "Error: The snapshot has been made, but it could not be stored in this extension's storage. Just saving it among your downloads instead.." Apparently this extension doesn't invoke Mozilla's "unlimitedStorage" permission and therefore only 2GB of snapshots can be made. After that limit, snapshots are saved in the system's default downloads directory, but cannot be searched via the extension. What a buzzkill.

I don't know if it supports cloud, like Dropbox, or anything else like Gdrive, etc. If it doesn't support any cloud (I don't use Webdav), could you add this feature please?

Is WebMemex Safe?

High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

WebMemex requires some sensitive permissions that could impact your browser and data security. Exercise caution before installing.
