Volume Control [Boost volume] Firefox

Volume Control [Boost volume]

Boost, or lower your volume up to or down 32 DB.

Features & Capabilities

Volume Control adds per-site audio controls for HTML5 video and audio in Firefox. Boost quiet media or lower loud websites by up to 32 dB, remember settings for individual sites, toggle stereo-to-mono playback, mute audio, and adjust volume with keyboard shortcuts. It works across embedded frames and supports media players added dynamically to pages.

The extension detects DRM-protected and cross-origin media that cannot be boosted through WebAudio. For restricted media, it safely falls back to native volume control, so lowering and muting still work while boosting and mono mixing remain unavailable. Volume Control processes audio locally, stores preferences in Firefox, and does not collect analytics, browsing history, media details, or personal information.

User Reviews

Pros: easy to use and can deliver the advertised boost, with some users reporting reliable operation on certain sites or browsers, plus open-source transparency. Cons: the extension often mutes audio, breaks playback on many sites (including embeds), can crash or freeze Firefox on some versions, and may cause audio artifacts or disappearances on certain sites. Overall, usefulness varies widely by site and Firefox version; it helps some users but is problematic for others.
Pros
  • Easy to use with a straightforward interface.
  • Does what it says: boosts volume as advertised.
  • Works well on certain sites/browsers (e.g., Zen Browser).
  • Open-source transparency (GitHub) increases trust.
  • Positive results for users who find it functioning reliably.
Cons
  • Mutes all audio when active.
  • Breaks or blocks playback on many sites (including embedded videos).
  • Can crash or freeze Firefox on some versions / is incompatible with certain Firefox updates.
  • Audio disappears on some sites until the extension is disabled.
  • Causes crackling or stuttering under boost; not a true non-compressive boost.
