Vertical Tabs Reloaded Firefox

Vertical Tabs Reloaded

By: Croydon
This Firefox add-on arranges tabs in a vertical rather than horizontal fashion. Hide and display manually the tab sidebar with a hotkey (Ctrl+Shift+V) or by clicking on the VTR icon.

Features & Capabilities

Vertical Tabs Reloaded is a Firefox add-on that rearranges your browser tabs from the default horizontal layout to a vertical sidebar, enhancing tab management and screen space usage. Users can toggle the vertical tab sidebar using a convenient hotkey (Ctrl+Shift+V) or by clicking the VTR icon, enabling quick access and hiding when needed.

This extension offers four distinct sidebar styles, displays tab status visually, supports hiding the sidebar in fullscreen mode, and lets you position the tab toolbar at the top, bottom, or hide it altogether. Although Firefox's default horizontal tab bar cannot currently be hidden due to browser limitations, Vertical Tabs Reloaded provides a practical alternative for users seeking a vertical tab experience with customization and ease of use. Feedback and improvements are welcomed via GitHub, ensuring ongoing enhancement of the add-on.

User Reviews

Vertical Tabs Reloaded is praised for its compact, fast vertical tab bar that many users prefer over horizontal tabs. It feels lean and reliable, with long-time users appreciating its stability. The main recurring criticisms are the lack of customization and theming, absence of container-tab integration, and limited built-in features like search and font/spacing controls. Some note that Firefox’s newer versions introduce built-in vertical tab features, reducing the need for the add-on. Overall, it’s a strong, efficient option, but container support and theming enhancements are common requests.
Pros
  • Provides a compact, slim vertical tab bar that improves usability over horizontal tabs.
  • Fast and responsive — often quicker than Tree Style Tabs and feels lightweight.
  • Lightweight with minimal permissions and stable, reliable performance.
  • Long-standing, trusted add-on with positive, enduring user sentiment.
  • Good for fullscreen workflows, offering a cleaner UI while managing many tabs.
Cons
  • UI/design is not visually appealing for all users; calls for better theming, reduced visual weight, and improved icon sizing.
  • Lacks container tab support (no container color indicators or context-menu options to move tabs into containers).
  • Limited customization options (no font-size/spacing controls, no built-in search, and few theme options; private mode restrictions).
  • Some users wish for easier theme toggling (no simple light/dark mode) and generally more customization flexibility.
Recent reviews
I've been using it for more than a decade, horizontal tabs are unusable. Now retiring VTR in favour of builtin feature of Fx >136. Thanks for your service!
