Level One Reading Android

Level One Reading

Free phonics app for all ages. No subscriptions. No paywalls. Forever.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Level One Reading is a completely free phonics app that teaches children aged 4–6 to read. It uses systematic synthetic phonics — the same approach used to teach reading in primary schools across England — and is designed to sit alongside the EYFS framework and the phonics teaching your child gets at school.

HOW IT WORKS

The app is structured into levels and stages. Each stage introduces a few new letter sounds and is designed to last about a week — roughly matching the pace of school.

Every stage follows the same pattern:

Flashcards — your child learns the new sounds. They tap each letter to hear the sound it makes (not the letter name — the sound).

Words — using the sounds they know, your child reads real words by tapping the dots underneath each one. Each dot is one sound. Tap the dots in order and the sounds blend together to make the word.

Books — short decodable story books where every single word uses only the sounds your child has already learned. Nothing they can't do. No guessing. The stories feature animated illustrations and video.

Stage check — a quick check using alien words (made-up nonsense words). If your child can read a word they've never seen before, they're genuinely reading the sounds.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Level One — the first individual letter sounds: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, e, u, r, h, b, f, l, and the first double letters.

Level Two — pairs and groups of letters that make one sound: sh, ch, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, and more, plus longer words and more complex stories.

Each level includes tricky words — common words like "the", "was", "said" that don't follow phonics rules and need to be learned by sight. These are taught through immersive dream world videos.

DESIGNED FOR PARENTS

You don't need to know anything about phonics. The app does the teaching. Sit with your child and let them tap. A dedicated parents section explains what the dots are, what tricky words are, why there are no capital letters, and how levels and stages work.
