Tridactyl Firefox

Tridactyl

Vim, but in your browser. Replace Firefox's control mechanism with one modelled on Vim. This addon is very usable, but is in an early stage of development. We intend to implement the majority of Vimperator's features.

Features & Capabilities

Tridactyl is a Vim-inspired extension that lets you control your browser entirely from the keyboard. Common tasks are bound to a single key, for example: open a new tab with t, follow a link with f (using lower-case hints), jump to the bottom with G or the top with gg, and focus a search field with gi. It also supports tab switching, hints, and tutor/help commands like :help and :tutor. The goal is to mirror the Vim/Vimperator/Pentadactyl experience, offering customizable bindings, hint-based navigation, and powerful command binding to the browser.

Development and availability: Tridactyl is usable but in an early stage of development with beta builds available on the project site. To implement the full Vimperator feature set, the extension requests permissions to read page content, communicate with external programs, manage bookmarks, history, tabs, downloads, and more. The project is open source and aims to bring most of Vimperator’s functionality to modern browsers.

User Reviews

Reviews are overwhelmingly positive: users praise Tridactyl for enabling fast, vim-style keyboard browsing, reducing mouse use, and becoming essential to their workflow. Several reviewers prefer it to Vimium for hinting/tab work. Few reviewers listed site-compatibility and hint/tabopen quirks, but those complaints were not repeated across multiple reviews.
Pros
  • Powerful vim-style, keyboard-driven browsing praised across reviews
  • Greatly reduces mouse use — many say they can stay on the home row
  • Users call it essential/‘can’t live without’ after using it
  • Preferred to Vimium by some users (better hint/tab behavior in some cases)

I like Tridactyl so far- it's my first foray into browser vim emulation and it does pretty well on most sites. I really appreciate motions like `gi` that let you jump to the main input field on a site. I've found that it doesn't completely replace mouse navigation for me; several sites I use have nonconventional clickable elements (not buttons/hrefs) and so the `f` finder doesn't highlight them, and `;;` highlights so many things it's hard to find the right one. I'm still solidly on the learning curve, but it's already made certain actions way quicker for me, and I love the command line- with some quick theming it's probably the coolest thing about my Firefox now! The native plugin works seamlessly too- and the ability to edit text in my preferred editor (Shoutout to Helix!) has been great as well. Solid work, highly recommended to give it a shot if you like modal editors.

Is Tridactyl Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Tridactyl requires a lot of sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.

Risk likelihood measures the probability that a Firefox add-on may turn malicious. This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on Firefox Add-ons Store, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been around, and other signals about the Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.
