Trace Firefox

Trace

A local-first ledger of where your personal information lives.

Modify request and response headers. No ads, no malware.

Features & Capabilities

Trace keeps a private, local record of which websites hold your personal information email, phone, username, and address fields so that when you move, change your number, or clean up after a data breach, the list of everywhere you need to update already exists.

It works passively: as you submit forms during normal browsing, Trace notes which site received which type of field and builds a searchable ledger, with first-seen and last-seen dates for every entry.

Local-first, no account, no server. Trace makes no network requests of its own. Your ledger is stored only in your browser, on your device, and field values are encrypted at rest before they are stored. Nothing is transmitted, sold, or shared. The only way your data leaves your device is if you explicitly export it yourself.

Passwords and card security codes are never recorded. They are detected only so they can be deliberately skipped, and cannot be stored in any form.

Pairs with the Trace desktop app: export your ledger from the extension and import it into the encrypted desktop vault for durable, offline review or export a plain spreadsheet whenever you need it.

Is Trace Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Trace requires a few sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.

Risk impact analysis details
  • Critical Allows access to all websites, posing a significant security risk as it can monitor and modify data from any visited site.
  • High ******* ******* **** *** ****** ***** *** ***** ** ******* **** ********* ********* ** * *********** *****
Risk likelihood
Risk likelihood measures the probability that a Firefox add-on may turn malicious. This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on Firefox Add-ons Store, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been around, and other signals about the Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.

Trace is recently added, and hasn't been around long enough for us to gather enough data to accurately assess its risk level.
