Onion Browser Button

By: Benthum
Easily browse the internet using TOR proxy with just one click!

Features & Capabilities

Onion Browser Button is a lightweight Chrome extension that allows users to easily connect their browser to the TOR network, enabling anonymous and secure internet browsing through the TOR proxy with just one click. It is an independent tool developed outside the official Tor® project and requires prior setup of the TOR connection on your PC or Mac.

To use Onion Browser Button, users must first connect their machine to the TOR network by downloading a small patch from the extension's GitHub repository. This patch provides simple scripts to establish the TOR connection on Windows or Mac devices. Once TOR is active, the extension seamlessly routes your browser's traffic through the TOR proxy, ensuring privacy and enhanced security. Note that in Firefox, the extension must be enabled for private windows to function properly.

Perfect for privacy-conscious users, Onion Browser Button offers an easy, unofficial way to access TOR without needing the full TOR browser. Bug reports and further support are available via the extension's homepage.

User Reviews

Users appreciate the Onion Browser Button for enabling private browsing via TOR and its pleasing design. However, multiple users report issues with functionality, primarily requiring additional unverified installations and incomplete instructions. The add-on doesn't automatically switch proxy settings, necessitating manual configuration. Some also mention poor icon contrast affecting usability. Overall, while the add-on is valued for privacy, its setup and reliability challenges hinder user experience.
Pros
  • Allows browsing with privacy by connecting through TOR proxy.
  • Works well when properly configured with a running Tor daemon or service.
  • Aesthetically pleasing and simple to use.
  • Considered a useful and respectful tool for accessing restricted sites or maintaining anonymity.
Cons
  • Does not work out-of-the-box; requires additional installation of unverified software from GitHub.
  • Incomplete or useless installation instructions leading to difficulty setting up.
  • Does not automatically switch proxy settings; users must switch manually to use TOR proxy.
  • Icon contrast and customization options are poor, making it difficult for some users to interact.
  • Some users find that it doesn't actually connect to TOR despite following instructions.

On my linux firefox box this works perfectly. all I wanted was a button to click to modify my proxy to the already running Tor connection I have (systemd tor service), and it does just that. As already stated, you need a tor connection established, and enable this extension access to private windows. does what it says on the tin. Thanks Edit: 1 request, an option to have the icon just say TOR, much like the FF "VPN" button.
