Features & Capabilities

Stop Auto Reload Chrome Extension

Stop Auto Reload is a powerful extension designed to block unwanted and automatic page reloads on specific websites. This is especially useful for users dealing with frequent page refreshes that can cause articles or links to disappear or for those with metered or slow internet connections who want to conserve bandwidth.

The extension works by injecting code into blacklisted URLs after a tab finishes loading, monitoring common reload keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl+R, Ctrl+Shift+R, F5, and Ctrl+F5. All other automatic reload attempts are blocked, ensuring content remains stable while letting users reload manually if needed. Users can customize the blacklist via the tab menu, toolbar icon context menu, or extension options.

Note: This extension only stops the whole page reloads, not elements within a page, and works solely on HTTP(S) URLs. An active tab that is protected will show an 'S' badge on the toolbar icon, and clicking this icon reloads the page manually. Protect your browsing experience from disruptive auto refreshes with Stop Auto Reload.

User Reviews

Users broadly find Stop Auto Reload useful for preventing unwanted page refreshes on configured sites, with a clear setup and badge indicator. It works well across several sites (like Twitter/X) and improves browsing efficiency. However, Facebook consistently remains a problem for many users, and performance is inconsistent across different sites or refresh methods, with some pages not being blocked at all. Reliability appears to be site-dependent.
Pros
  • Effectively stops auto-reloading on configured sites.
  • Easy to configure via context menu or Options to blacklist URLs.
  • Visual feedback with a red 'S' badge shows when a tab is being stopped from reloading.
  • Helpful across multiple sites (e.g., Twitter/X) to prevent slow reloads and improve browsing efficiency.
Cons
  • Not effective on Facebook for many users (Facebook keeps reloading).
  • Results are inconsistent across sites; some pages still auto-refresh despite using the extension.
  • Some reviewers report it does not stop auto-reloading at all on certain pages or sites.
  • Certain refresh methods (e.g., meta refresh tags) aren’t blocked on some sites.

Simply doesn't work. Might have worked before I tried this extension. So, don't waste your time adding this extension to firefox. You'll just end up removing it like I did.
