User Reviews

Openreads is praised for its simplicity, elegant design, and being free and open source, making it an excellent minimal book tracking app without ads or sign-up. Users appreciate the easy book logging, visual book covers, and active improvements. However, the app lacks some advanced features like detailed progress tracking, shelves, and social interaction, and has occasional issues with book cover downloads and finding non-English books. Some users report app instability with large libraries. Overall, it serves well as a straightforward personal book tracker with room for feature expansion.
Pros
  • Simple and intuitive user interface; easy to use and not cluttered with unnecessary features.
  • No ads, no in-app purchases, and no sign-up required, making it privacy-friendly and free.
  • Open source and frequently updated based on user feedback, showing active development.
  • Supports easy logging of books and includes beautiful book covers, enhancing visual appeal.
  • Barcode scanner function and basic book search with covers available, aiding in adding books quickly.
Cons
  • Limited progress tracking features (e.g., no reading timer or detailed stats) which some users miss.
  • Book database integration issues: incomplete cover downloads, difficulties finding non-English books, and some books missing in OpenLibrary.
  • Lack of advanced features such as shelves/collections, recommendation system, and author/reader interactions.
  • App instability/crashing with large libraries (200+ books) reported by some users.
  • Import functionality was initially missing but has been added later; some desire for more metadata features like price tracking.

Straight forward as it should be. I like the simple interface and that i can easily log my books to it. I recommend it for anyone who wants a book tracker as it should be. There is no fancy and distracting stuff. I love it.
