SOCKS5 Switcher Firefox

SOCKS5 Switcher

ne-click SOCKS5 proxy switcher for Firefox with multi-profile support and authentication.

Features & Capabilities

SOCKS5 Switcher is a lightweight, no-frills proxy router for Firefox. Configure one or more SOCKS5 proxies once, then switch between them with a single click from the toolbar — no full browser restart, no fiddling with system network settings, no leaking traffic to other apps. Only Firefox is affected.

Features

• Multiple proxy profiles Save as many SOCKS5 endpoints as you need (work proxy, home tunnel, jump host, commercial provider) and switch the active one from the toolbar popup. Each profile has its own host, port, optional credentials, and DNS-over-proxy setting.

• SOCKS5 authentication Full username/password support. Profiles can also carry a credential list, so you can rotate through multiple accounts on the same proxy endpoint without re-typing.

• Exit indicator in the toolbar Show your current exit IP (shortened), the exit country code (e.g. "DE"), or a country flag emoji directly in the toolbar badge. Useful for spotting at a glance whether traffic is going where you expect.

• Per-profile DNS handling Enable or disable proxyDNS per profile to control whether DNS lookups go through the proxy or stay local.

• Bypass list Configure hosts that should bypass the proxy and connect directly.

• Works everywhere in Firefox Uses Firefox's native browser.proxy.onRequest API, which means the routing happens at the network layer for every Firefox request, including WebSockets and background fetches. No PAC scripts, no external helper binary.

Use cases

• Quickly toggle between a corporate SOCKS5 proxy and direct connection • Route Firefox through an SSH SOCKS tunnel (ssh -D) while leaving the rest of the OS untouched • Test region-specific behaviour by switching between proxies in different countries • Avoid sharing browser traffic with the OS-level proxy configuration

Privacy

The extension stores all proxy settings locally in your browser. It never transmits configuration data to the developer or any third party.

The optional exit IP / country indicator is the only feature that contacts external services (ipify.org, ipwho.is, ipinfo.io). When enabled, lookups are routed through the active proxy so the result reflects the proxy's exit, not your real IP. The feature can be disabled in the options.

No analytics, no telemetry, no advertising.

Technical notes

• Manifest v2 WebExtension • Requires Firefox 115.0 (ESR) or later • Firefox only — Chrome's proxy API does not support SOCKS5 authentication, so a Chrome port is not currently feasible • Open source under MPL-2.0 • Source code: https://github.com/realtobiodev/firefox-socks5-proxy
